Plasma Ion Propulsion

 

One of the most worked out electric propulsion type, tested in space, reliable and which has high life resource is Plasma Ion Thruster or PIT. Plasma Ion Thrusters are being designed for a different missions: station-keeping communication satellites, spacecraft deep missions to asteroids, comets and other planets. The thruster type has high specific impulse - the ratio of thrust to the rate of propellant consumption, it needs significantly less fuel for missions than chemical propulsion are required.
